- Each battle will have an adult reader, who will read the questions, and an adult timekeeper, who will make sure the team answers within the allotted time.
- We will have 3 battles happening simultaneously each round - and 5 rounds so that all teams can battle each other before the final battle.
- Each team needs to have a spokesperson that answers for the team. The reader will only accept answers from the spokesperson. The spokesperson can change from round to round
- Each team will answer 20 questions per round.
- The team shall have 30 seconds after the reading of the question to give its response through the team spokesperson. Teams are encouraged to confer before giving a response. Only the first answer the spokesperson gives will be acceptable--the team cannot use up the time left to guess other titles.
- Scoring will be 3 points for the title, and 2 points for the author for “In which book” questions. Scoring will be 5 points for factual questions about the book.
- If a team has begun its response before time is called, it will be allowed to complete it.

Revised Battle Date - May 16
This was sent via email, but due to a conflict with an art class that many participants are in, we have moved the battle to May 16 in the morning.
Caddie Woodlawn book club was a great success. Thanks to all for coming and for being such great pioneers.

A reminder that March 31 (Thursday) is the deadline for submitting questions. I have a nice long document for Wonder. If you haven’t emailed me the questions, please do so this week. It’s a big job to pool together and then divide up all the questions for the battle so we need lots of time. (If you have sent me questions, can you let me know? I feel like I got a few a while back but am having a hard time finding them in the many battle emails that I have).
If you don’t remember what you have signed up for (or if you haven’t signed up for anything yet) the list is here. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e4fa9ad2fa6ff2-questions There are still 3 books that haven’t been spoken for. Thanks in advance for your help!
A reminder to put aside good books that you are done with for the prize table (at least 1 per child).
Thanks!

Sign Up for Book Questions
In addition to books and kids, a Battle of the Books needs questions! We are asking each family who is participating to sign up for a book and create questions. Deadline for writing your questions is March 31. Please let me know if you need any help with question writing.
This link has more information on the questions and a way to sign up. Note that Gena looks like a rock star for volunteering to write for 4 books but she has some questions from another Battle of the Books program for some of those books. Lucky us!
Note: Please do not share the questions you are writing for the Battle with any of the children participating in the Battle. We don't want any kids to have an unfair advantage.
Here is the signup sheet http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e4fa9ad2fa6ff2-questions

Book club recap
I meant to send this out a week ago, but I had a 2 year old with a birthday and a family vacation, so I am just getting to our recap now.
Thank you to all who came out for our first book club about The Tale of Despereaux. We ate soup, made mice, built mazes, drew pictures, and ate books. There was also dressup and outside sword fights. It was great fun. We made this soup a few days after book club and it was fantastic. I halved the recipe but put the 2 bunches of watercress soup and it was divine!
The only thing I was disappointed about was the discussion piece. I think there were too many kids in one room and too much going on to have a good discussion. Next time I think I will break it into small groups.
The next book club is going to be at Julie's house on Wednesday, Feb 3, 1-3, and there's a FB event set up for it. The book is Otis Spofford and I have been laughing so hard I tear up as we read it. Harper and I are just finishing up the Oakville Public Library copy and should have it ready for the next person in the next day or so. I have also ordered 2 used copies and should be receiving them this week. I am happy to lend them out to folks once I get them.
Harper and I were looking at the remaining books to find another good one for a book club and we were thinking of Holes for March. If anyone has any suggestions let me know!
I have set up online spreadsheets to help your group start viewing who has read what. This should help your kids decide what to read next - find a book that no one has read!
We will be getting parents to sign up for question writing in the next few weeks.
Thanks, and happy reading!
