November Update - Battle of the Books

We are so glad to have so many students joining Battle of the Books!  We have over 30 kids signed up so far, and more interested.  Our goal is to have entries and teams finalized by early December.

At this point, kids and parents should be familiar with the 20 books (see previous post) and kids should begin reading books off the list.  It's OK to listen to the books, read them independently, or read with family members.  We want them to enjoy the books but also read to remember key details that will help them at the Battle.

When teams are finalized, each child will want to coordinate with his/her team members to make sure that the team covers the entire list by May.  For now, it's OK to start with any book that seems appealing.

Below is some background on what Battle of the Books is, for those who have just joined the group.

<<
What is it? The Battle of the Books is a book based trivia tournament in which teams will answer questions from a given list of 20 novels. Points are awarded for correctly answered questions. The books are chosen from a number of different categories, and range in level of difficulty. Students need not read all the books, however each book should be read by at least one member of the team.
Who is it for? Students in roughly grades 3 8 (grade 8 max.) Younger participants at parental discretion, but must be able to contribute adequately to a team.
For our younger elementary children, there will be a mini battle / activity for them, with books more suited to their level. More information to follow.
How do I get on a Team?
There are two ways:
  1. 1)  Teams can be made up on your own between families and friends
  2. 2)  Individuals can submit their names to be placed on a team.
Teams should be made up from a range of ages.
How many people on a Team? Teams consists of a minimum of 4, and a maximum of 8 individuals.
What will it cost? There may be a small fee (less than $5) per child to cover the costs of renting a room (if needed) and for prizes. Our group will cover most or all of the costs.
Where and when will the final battle take place? The battle will be held in Early May . The exact date and location are to be determined.

Feedback, finally!

I finally got to the stack of feedback forms and wanted to summarize some of the things people mentioned about the battle.

Suggestions for next year:

  • Each parent adds to the list - 2 to 3 books per family (we did ask for suggestions at the beginning, but not everyone took advantage of the opportunity - would love more input next year!)  Each family could be responsible for creating questions for the ones they suggest.
  • Have teams steal questions (this was hard to do with our odd number of teams.  Maybe next year we can strive to have even numbers)
  • Teams should meet more to practice for battle
  • Less books (10-15 instead of 20)
  • Have junior (Grades 1-3 ish) and senior (grades 4-8 ish)
  • Shorten time period and/or reduce list so doesn't interfere with school curriculum
  • Have adults write questions not kids

I have heard from a few folks who want to meet and firm up a plan this summer before next fall.  If you haven't let me know you are interested in helping out, let me know and I will include you in our planning.

Here are some books that people have mentioned including on a list for next year (if you have other ideas, send them to me and I will keep a master list).  These are just ideas - we will make our list with next year's participants.

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Holes by Louis Sachar OR There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom by Louis Sachar
The View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg
Call of the Wild by Jack London
The Borrowers
Harriet the Spy
Pippi Longstocking
When You Reach Me
Something Gordon Korman - maybe Schooled?  or No More Dead Dogs
The Mysterious Benedict Society
The Story of My Life by Helen Keller
The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
Caddie Woodlawn
My Side of the Mountain
Half Magic by Edward Eager
The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett

For younger kids
The Hundred Dresses
Sarah, Plain and Tall
Miss Rumphius

Last Minute Thoughts

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered and come through for the group at the last minute.

One thing I just thought of was a team name.  If your team would prefer to be called something besides Team 1, 2, 3 etc. let me know tomorrow.

Here's my final list:

Lunch at noon - bring your own.  Picnic on floor. Bring a water bottle for use during the battle.
12:30 - Review rules
When ready ~ 12:45 start first battle

What people are bringing/doing:

  • Survey - Rachael
  • Voting for best book - Michelle
  • Timers/Readers (can arm wrestle for who gets to do it) - Julie, Jessica, Gena, Kerri, Rebecca, Thia, Michelle
  • Making stickers for back of bookmarks - Kerri
  • Bringing books for prize table - lots of people (thank you!)
  • Bringing snacks/treats - Rebecca, Joyce (could use a few more)
  • Staying around to help tidy up so I can get in the car and drive to Virginia - anyone who has a few extra minutes - thanks!

Rules for Thursday

1. Each battle will have an adult reader, who will read the questions, and an adult timekeeper, who will make sure the team answers within the allotted time.
2. We will have 2 battles going on each round – one with 2 teams and 1 with 3 teams (we have 5 total).
3. Each team needs to have a spokesperson that answers for the team.  The reader will only accept answers from the spokesperson.
4. Each team will answer 15-20 questions (amount TBD) per round.
5. The team shall have 30 seconds after the reading of the question to give its response through the team spokesperson. Teams are encouraged to confer before giving a response. Only the first answer the spokesperson gives will be acceptable--the team cannot use up the time left to guess other titles.
6. Scoring will be 3 points for the title, and 2 points for the author for “In which book” questions.  Scoring will be 5 points for factual questions about the book.
7. If a team has begun its response before time is called, it will be allowed to complete it.

12:00 – arrive for lunch and set up
12:30 - final rule review

Times approximate (we will proceed to the next round when both groups are ready)
12:45 – Battle 1
1:15  -- Battle 2
1:45 – Battle 3
2:30 – Awards and celebration

WHAT I STILL NEED

  • Volunteers for the readers/timers (Julie and Gena have volunteered but need 2 more)
  • Someone to make a way for kids to vote on their favorite books (I was thinking a sheet of paper for each book with the title on it, and then give each kid 3 dot stickers to place on the paper to vote).  If anyone wants to take this on for me that would be helpful.  I am trying to get out of town for a week vacation after the battle and would appreciate the help
  • Volunteers to bring snacks/treats
  • More books for the prize table
Thanks so much and looking forward to a great battle.

One week to go

Here's what you need to know

1.  We are going to run our battle next Thursday (May 7) from 12-3 at the Y in the multipurpose rooms (can't remember the name - they are the first ones on the left after the climbing room).  12-12:30 will be eating a picnic lunch together (BYO) and doing a brief rules review.  Then we will break for 3 battle rounds. We are going to run 2 battles at the same time - one with 2 teams and one with 3 teams.

2.  I  will need a few volunteers on the day of the battle.  I will need 2 readers and 2 timekeepers.  The readers will be responsible for reading the questions and recording points.  The timekeepers will be responsible for making sure the teams answer within their allotted time.  Let me know if you are willing to help.

3. I  will post rules this weekend and send out a note.  We will review them before the battle starts next Thursday.

4.  We could still use some good condition/high interest prize books for our prize table. A great way to clean space off your bookshelves.

Thanks for sending all the questions - we are almost done!

Questions and authors and other stuff, too

QUESTIONS
We have 15 books with questions and only 5 to go.  This post has the full list of who has done what, but here are the ones that have not been submitted.  IF there's a book you want to do and someone else has signed up for it, feel free to contact that person and maybe you can split the work.  The more hands the merrier.

Because of Winn-Dixie (Ramlogen)
Hatchet (Ramlogen)
The Giver by Lois Lowry (Wiersma)
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate (Adili)
Stowaway by Karen Hesse

AUTHORS
During the "in which book" rounds, where the kids are given a question and have to come up with the book, they will get points for both the book and also the author.

PARTICIPATION
I am finalizing the schedule and how the battles will work.  Block your calendars from 12-3 on May 7 and I will let you know the specific details by the end of the week.  Since there are 5 teams, I am thinking we will have 2 battles going on at the same time and 1 team doing a solo lightning round.   As I am planning this out, I want to make sure all the teams are participating.  Team 1, the Saldia's won't be able to make it.  Are you guys OK as is, or do we need to shift kids around?

PRIZES
I have some bookmarks from the kids.  All kids will get to pick some books from the prize table.  Also, there will be a pizza party for the winning team at a later date.

Fantastic book club and deadline for questions - April 17

It was so fun to have the Battle of the 4 Armies at The Hobbit book club last week.  We drank Hobbit beer, ate scones, found the Arkenstone, made peg dolls, wrote runes, and ran around with swords and shields and did battle.  No plates were broken!

We should get our questions sheet finalized soon.     The description of how to write questions and the signup sheet is at this post

http://oakvillebookbattle.blogspot.ca/2015/01/battle-questions-signup.html

These are the books that still need questions written.

Amos Fortune, Free Man by Elizabeth Yates
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
The Giver by Lois Lowry
The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer
Stowaway

I am going to ask that all questions be written and submitted to me by April 17.    This will give me plenty of time to compile them into a document for day of Battle (May 7, 1:30).  Angie and JoAnna both rock as they have already submitted questions.  Remember, get your kids to help you!

If there have been any changes to your team, please let me know ASAP.

March 27 - mark your calendars

Enthusiastic moms at swimming agreed that March 27 would be a great day to get together and discuss The Hobbit.  I have a few ideas and am doing a bit of research for others (http://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/thehobbit.htm).  Rune writing, map making, dwarf peg dolls - if you have any ideas, let me know.  You have 3 weeks to read the book if you haven't done so already.  Watching the movie(s) does not count as they are VERY different (which will be fun to discuss).

Cereal boxes and next book club

Kerri brought this fantastic idea - cereal box book reports - to my attention and I am going to suggest to my group that we do them.   Each person on your team can do a different book.  What a fun project!  Here are some directions.

Our next book club will be The Hobbit.  Location still TBD - Michelle and I are figuring it out.  How does Friday, March 27 look?  We could do another book-related lunch (lembas?  plate breaking?), some crafts/activities, and discussion.  Let me know via email if you are interested in attending and if that date works for you.

Thanks for a great book club!

Thank you to Joyce, Kerri, Michelle, Rachael, and Gena who brought their kids, some food, and a lot of positive energy to our house for our 1st book club meeting.  The kids had a blast doing crafts, discussing the book, and also having a bit of fun together. We decided we will meet again and were thinking of The Hobbit as a good book club book.

For those on the edge of their seat, dog L won the Winn-Dixie look alike contest.

A few things I forgot to discuss with the kids

1.  First impressions - What kind of judgments does Opal make about people (or even animals) when she first meets them, and how is she proved wrong?  What lesson does she learn?  Have you ever had an experience like this?

2.  Did you see the movie for this book?  Do you want to?  Why/why not?  What is your experience with books that you like being turned into movies?

Battle Questions SIgnup

A reminder that we need 10-15 questions per book written.  The first 2 books have been taken and questions are done.  Wouldn't it be nice to check that off your list?  Email them to me and I will keep a master list for battle day.  Hint - if your children are capable, have them help you write questions.  What a great way for them to review!

Half of your questions should be in the "book as the answer" format and half should be in the "factual questions about the book" format.

Examples: Book as the answer
In which book, does a boy think he will be hiding out in the woods but finds out he will be hiding in a public library instead?  From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
Factual questions about the book
In Anne of Green Gables, where does Anne go to teachers college?  Queen’s

We are at 1334 Cambridge Dr, just 10 minutes east of the Y.  Cambridge is off of Cairncroft which is off Lakeshore.

We will do lunch and crafts from 12 - 12:45 ish, then do a book discussion afterwards.

Families currently signed up to attend - Wiersma, Firth, Ramlogen, Hammond, Wilson, Vitali.  Am I missing anyone?

January Update - Battle date, question writing, book club and more

A few thoughts:

1.  I am trying to finalize the date for the Battle.  I am thinking of May 7, before the Victoria Day holiday and before people get too much summer on their mind.  Please let me know if you have any issues with that date.  A backup date I was thinking would be May 21, after the holiday.

2.  I am excited to hear that many kids have been reading and that some of the books have been loved.  If there's a book that your child doesn't enjoy, it's OK to drop and move onto something else on the list.  Hopefully there will be someone on your team who will gravitate to that title.

3.  It would be great to start writing questions.  If each parent would take a book and write 10-15 questions.  Let's say 1/2 of the questions should have the book/title as the answer, and 1/2 should be factual questions about a known book.   Here are some sample questions that were given to me.  I would not try to make them too tricky - we want to reward reading of the book.   Please let me know which book you are volunteering for.  You can email me the questions and I will prepare them into a big doc for the battle day. v

Book as the answer
In which book does a girl not want to go out at night because she is afraid of a haunted wood? Anne of Green Gables by L.M. MontgomeryIn which book, does a character give up a boat in favour of a caravan?  Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

In which book, does a boy think he will be hiding out in the woods but finds out he will be hiding in a building instead?  From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
In which book, does a girl not want to leave her red boots in the mud?  Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary
Factual questions about the book
In Anne of Green Gables, where does Anne go to teachers college?  Queen’s
In Dog Days, what did Rodrick write in his Dad’s day planner?  “Sell Greg”
In Tom’s Midnight Garden, what is the only thing Hatty and Tom argue about?  Who is a ghost
In The Calder Game, which teacher do the children prefer?  Miss Hussey

4.  We still are on for the January book club for Because of Winn-Dixie.  Harper is organizing it and has a ton of activities.  For those who are interested, how does Friday, Jan 23, work?  We could meet here noonish (shouldn't be too hard for those coming after swim) and we'll have some food, activities, and a bit of discussion.  Let me know if you are interested and if that date works.
