January Update - Battle date, question writing, book club and more

A few thoughts:

1.  I am trying to finalize the date for the Battle.  I am thinking of May 7, before the Victoria Day holiday and before people get too much summer on their mind.  Please let me know if you have any issues with that date.  A backup date I was thinking would be May 21, after the holiday.

2.  I am excited to hear that many kids have been reading and that some of the books have been loved.  If there's a book that your child doesn't enjoy, it's OK to drop and move onto something else on the list.  Hopefully there will be someone on your team who will gravitate to that title.

3.  It would be great to start writing questions.  If each parent would take a book and write 10-15 questions.  Let's say 1/2 of the questions should have the book/title as the answer, and 1/2 should be factual questions about a known book.   Here are some sample questions that were given to me.  I would not try to make them too tricky - we want to reward reading of the book.   Please let me know which book you are volunteering for.  You can email me the questions and I will prepare them into a big doc for the battle day. v

Book as the answer
In which book does a girl not want to go out at night because she is afraid of a haunted wood? Anne of Green Gables by L.M. MontgomeryIn which book, does a character give up a boat in favour of a caravan?  Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame

In which book, does a boy think he will be hiding out in the woods but finds out he will be hiding in a building instead?  From the Mixed up Files of Mrs. Basil E Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg
In which book, does a girl not want to leave her red boots in the mud?  Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary
Factual questions about the book
In Anne of Green Gables, where does Anne go to teachers college?  Queen’s
In Dog Days, what did Rodrick write in his Dad’s day planner?  “Sell Greg”
In Tom’s Midnight Garden, what is the only thing Hatty and Tom argue about?  Who is a ghost
In The Calder Game, which teacher do the children prefer?  Miss Hussey

4.  We still are on for the January book club for Because of Winn-Dixie.  Harper is organizing it and has a ton of activities.  For those who are interested, how does Friday, Jan 23, work?  We could meet here noonish (shouldn't be too hard for those coming after swim) and we'll have some food, activities, and a bit of discussion.  Let me know if you are interested and if that date works.
